The imp is compatible with most standard WiFi systems, but it does have a few specific arrangements where it will not connect to WiFi. The aim of this article is to outline the most common issues we have run into.
The imp requires WiFi, but more specifically, it needs WiFi Type 4 or 802.11n, which uses a 2.4 GHz Freqency.
The WiFi network must have a standard password. The imp can not connect to an unsecured network. If your network is currently unsecured, you may be able to log into your WiFi to add a password, or reach out to your internet provider for additional assistance.
The imp needs a constant internet connection, so using your cell phone as a hot spot will not work, as the internet will go away when you leave with your cell phone. Some cell carries make designated hot spots that you can install in your home and the imp is typically compatible with these network types.
The imp can not connect to a network that requires you to enter something on a webpage, such as a room number or last name, to complete the connection.
The imp can not connect to a 'switching' router that alternates between WiFi Type 4 and 6. Reach out to your internet provider for help setting up a dedicated WiFi Type 4 network.
