Buying and managing imp for a friend or family member
Are you buying imp for someone else, like Mom? Do you intend to help them manage imp? Perhaps with your own smartphone or tablet? If so, this guide is for you.
First, we’d like to say thank you for caring for another. The founders of imp have spent years helping their parents and understand many of the joys and challenges. When the founders designed imp, it was with the idea of safety in mind. We hope that the imp box can help protect your loved ones.
If you are buying the imp for someone else AND WILL MANAGE IT FOR THEM, there are a few things you need to know:
- The email address you use at purchase will be the email address you use to set up and manage the account.
- You need to install the imp box in the location where it will screen the calls. It can not be set up ahead of time in your own home.
- If you can not physically be at your mom’s house, a neighbor or caregiver can help get it set up. They can “invite” you to join as another user.

- If these options do not work for you, please reach out to our imp support team, as we may be able to help.
- Once the imp box is set up, other users can be “invited” to help manage. We have several imps with four or more users.
- Amid setup, imp will ask you to share your contacts. This is how imp builds the initial Greenlist. We recognize this is a sensitive issue, and have written an article on the details of contact sharing. While it might seem strange to Greenlist your accountant on your mom’s phone, it makes building and maintaining the Greenlist super easy. If you choose to share the contacts, you can choose which of your contacts go on which list.
- The imp has bright LED lights. If needed, they can be disabled in the app after onboarding. This helps the imp be less distracting in the home.
If you are buying the imp for someone else and THEY WILL MANAGE, OR CO-MANAGE imp, there are a few options that make this easy:
- Decide at checkout who will be the main account holder and use their email at checkout. This email will be used to set up the imp box.
- Once set up, the imp gives you the option to have additional users. There are two options to choose from Co-Owner or Limited User.
- Co-Owner - Can manage all settings for everyone.
- Limited Users - Have limited powers, and limited ability to change things. This was designed with young children or older adults in mind.
- You can choose to share your contacts with the imp box or not. If you choose to share them, you can choose which of your contacts go on which list. This article goes into more details about contact sharing.
